In the French imagination, the Belle Epoque remains the prosperous and carefree period of the inter-war period, that of the advent of the Enlightenment ideal; but it is also that of the proliferation of artistic innovations. The exhibition By Day & by Night: Paris in the Belle Epoque will highlight artists who have made their contribution to the building (Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Eugene Atget …). Presented at the Norton Simon Museum from Friday, October 4, 2019 to Monday, March 2, 2020, it traces the changes in the artistic process, with the abandonment of oil painting in favor of engraving.

The paintings, drawings, engravings, posters and photographs also reveal how the French artists of that time interpreted the daily life in an extraordinary way: Parisians attending a show at the Moulin Rouge, workers in the street, café terrace animated. Three series of lithographs, among the most innovative of this period, will be presented to the public: "Some aspects of the life of Paris" Pierre Bonnard (1899), "Elles" Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1896) and "Landscapes and interiors "by Édouard Vuillard (1899). In parallel, many events will bring the exhibition to life: readings, film screenings and a dance show on February 1st.
