The pilot of a small plane that crashed into a house in southern California and caught fire on Thursday died, authorities said.

A father and a child inside the house escaped without injuries after the accident occurred during the morning in Upland, in San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles.

The single-engine Cirrus SR22 fell on Upland. Authorities believe that the pilot, who was not immediately identified, was the only person on board.

Upland police captain Marcelo Blanco said the cause of the accident is being investigated.

Television news helicopters showed that a large part of the house was destroyed and burning. A parachute appeared on trees.

Cirrus planes are equipped with parachutes that pilots can deploy in case of emergency.

The house is near Cable Airport, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles.
