The suspect, believed to be driving drunk, escaped on foot after fatally crashing the woman’s car in the city of Lancaster

A tragedy occurred Tuesday night in the city of Lancaster, north of Los Angeles County, when a driver suspected of being intoxicated collided with the car of a pregnant woman. Neither she nor her son survived.

The driver of the gray Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was being pursued by Los Angeles Sheriff officials when he crashed into a red Dodge Avenger car in which the woman was riding.

Authorities said the man in the pickup was driving erratically around 9:45 p.m. eastbound on K Avenue and 12th Street. An officer tried to stop him, but the driver ignored him and so they began to pursue him.

A statement from the Sheriff indicated that the suspect managed to get away while driving at high speed on J-8 Avenue towards West 10th Street: “The (Dodge) Ram did not stop at the red light when entering the intersection of 10th Street West and crashed with the red Dodge Avenger car. “

The pickup was overturned on its side, while the Avenger car ended up on its head.

The woman was transferred to Antelope Valley Hospital, where she and her child, still in the womb, lost their lives from the injuries sustained. The woman’s name was not immediately released.

Instead, the suspect who caused the tragedy fled the scene of the accident on foot, so authorities are requesting information from the public in order to find him. Please call detectives at (661) 948-8466 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
