Strasbourg Christmas Market / Daniel Shoenen

Christmas has two capitals: New York and Strasbourg. The two will meet in December. The cities of Strasbourg, Mulhouse, Colmar and the Alsace region are organizing their first Christmas market in Strasbourg-Alsace from 6 to 22 December at Bowling Green Park (South Manhattan). Founded in 1570, the Strasbourg market, the oldest of its kind in France, moved into New York's oldest park for the holidays, notes the press release.

An illumination of fir, decorated with handmade objects, will kick off the festivities on Thursday, December 5 from 5pm to 8pm. In pure Strasbourg tradition, thirty chalets imported from Alsace will house stalls of Alsatian products (pottery, household items …). Gourmands will not be left out. They will be able to fill up foie gras, bredele (Alsatian cupcakes), sauerkraut and flambé tarts, against a backdrop of Christmas carols.

New York is not the first international destination for the illustrious market, which attracts two million people every year. He also traveled through Tokyo, Moscow, Beijing, Taipei and Seoul. In June, the Strasbourg City Council paid a subsidy of 66,660 euros to the local tourist office to finance the project. The Eurometropolis of Strasbourg (EMS) has also put the hand in the pocket for 133.340 euros.
