The story is that of a group of stateless men, anonymous, mercenaries, from the Foreign Legion famous for asking no questions to its candidates and offering a regime of unparalleled harshness and brutality. The African landscapes refer to the childhood of Claire Denis, spent with a diplomat father. With the help of Agnès Godard, director of photography, Claire Denis revisits military and male honor codes, colonialism, destructive jealousy and repressed desire. Set today, this film is a variation of Hermann Melville’s Billy Budd, periodically using the opera score by Benjamin Britten.

Claire Denis is no stranger to Texas. She spent several months in Houston in the early 1980s when she worked as Wim Wenders’ first assistant director on his feature film Paris, Texas.
