The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced this week that will speed up the process to obtain the "Real ID", in 23 government offices of the state of California.

The new “DMV Express” procedure will allow those interested in obtaining this identification to enter their documents online, before visiting the government office.

"No more excuses. There is no reason why Californians who want a ‘Real ID’ do not come to an office. No appointment is needed, and now there is an option to bring your confirmation and be treated as if you had an appointment, ”said DMV director Steve Gordon.
"Complete the application, upload your documents and bring those documents with your confirmation number for an" Express Experience "the same day or as soon as possible," he added.

What is the ‘Real ID’

The law of the real ID was created by the Republican representative James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin and promulgated 15 years ago. Sensenbrenner also introduced the PATRIOT Act in 2001, under the Government of George Bush Jr.

Unlike the driver's license or current state ID card, the real ID is a federal document and to obtain it it is necessary to present the birth certificate, Social Security number and proof of permanent residence in the country.

The cost of the real ID driver's license is $ 35, equal to the cost of the state driver's license.
The Real ID is a optional and non-mandatory document. Those who prefer to continue using their state driver's license as before, can do so.

From October 1, 2020, those people who want to travel within the US must present either their Real ID, or your passport. The Royal ID also allows entry to certain federal buildings.

DMV Express

Those interested in obtaining the Real ID can upload their documents online, before visiting the DMV, to reduce wait time In the government office. The confirmation of this procedure is, in turn, the reservation of a shift.

Another advantage of this new system is that the local DMV office will send a text to those waiting in line When your turn approaches. In this way, the interested parties can leave the waiting line and return to the DMV when they receive the text that will indicate the estimated waiting time.

So far, only the following offices will offer the “Express” experience:
Davis, El Monte, Fremont, Fullerton, Laguna Hills, Los Gatos, Manteca, Newhall, Pasadena, Pleasanton, Redwood City, Sacramento Broadway, San Clemente, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose Driver License Processing Center, San Mateo, San Pedro , Santa Ana, Santa Clara, Temecula, Vacaville and Walnut Creek.

The DMV estimates that by June, this service will be available in all offices at the state level.
