In the March 3 election, a new City Council of Los Angeles will be elected for the 14th district. It is a typically Latin area, cradle of Mexican-American culture, which includes among others Boyle Heights, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, and Downtown , the thriving and dynamic city center. The district has been in the hands of José Huizar since 2005.

In the ballot, two other candidates with distinguished trajectory of public service and dedication to the Latino community are presented, but who come from different experiences: Mónica García and Kevin de León.

De León, born in Los Angeles to Guatemalan parents, received 46% of the votes in his recent nomination for Federal Senator. Previously and after serving in the Legislative Assembly he was the president of the California Senate where he promoted important legislation to improve the lives of the community, including gun control, air quality and drinking water.

Highlight there SB54 law, which made California into a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants.

His senatorial district included the boundaries of the municipal district now at stake.

Monica Garcia, born in East Los Angeles is an education expert; For years she was an activist in the popular neighborhoods and since 2006 she serves on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Unified School District as a member and president. He led educational justice, including promoting class reduction and supporting students who speak English as a second language. During his trip the construction of new schools went off and the graduation rates improved, among other achievements.

Both have similar priorities, among others: stop the homeless crisis in their district, which includes the homeless focus on Skid Row; rapid construction of accessible housing; improve mental health care, or develop transportation and reduce environmental pollution by the many highways that cross the district's neighborhoods.

While both are worthy of the job and of representing the community, The Opinion considers that Kevin de León's leadership experience as well as the coalitions he leads, his positions, trajectory and achievements, make him the preferable candidate to take the city of Los Angeles forward.

We support Kevin de León for the position. We also expect him to lead effective initiatives to improve the lives of our people in the district and the city in the areas of development and growth that matter most to them: housing, transportation, air quality, security and others.

The Opinion recommends voting, on March 3, for Kevin de León for District 14 of the Los Angeles City Council.
