Many still do not know it, but this Sunday, September 6, Mexicans living in Los Angeles will be able to vote for a referendum to be held next year to determine if the former presidents of Mexico are brought to trial, and if they are found. Guilty of corruption, they would go to jail and what they stole would be recovered.

All they need to do is provide your name, signature and identify yourself with your Mexican voter ID or your California driver’s license.”Said Juan José Gutiérrez, national advisor of the MORENA party and the president of this party in Los Angeles who, together with non-party people, participate in the collection of signatures.

He specified that dozens of volunteers of Mexican origin who live in Los Angeles have joined the proposal of the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador to gather signatures as a precondition for holding a referendum next year in which it will be decided whether to prosecute former Mexican leaders.

“We will be from 11 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon at Placita Olvera ready to receive the signatures.”

But another group will also set up a table outside the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles with the goal of obtaining signatures.

“People who for some reason cannot attend to give their signature to bring former Mexican presidents to trial, can call 213-746-6264 to do so later,” said the Morenista leader.

Hundreds of volunteers are participating in this voting process this Sunday in the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago, Washington, New York, New Jersey and Phoenix.

“I have no idea how many signatures we can get, but hopefully we can get between 4,000 and 5,000,” said Juan José.

In Morena’s case, they have five local committees, in Paramount, Los Angeles, Compton, Pasadena and San Fernando that collaborate in this effort, but there are many volunteers who do not belong to any party.

“This exercise will make it possible to know if the people of Mexico have matured and demand that corrupt former presidents be prosecuted so that they are punished as they deserve. It is important that we Mexicans here are present and say what we want ”.

The signatures will be delivered to the National Electoral Institute (INE) for it to carry out a plebiscite with the question: do you agree with the corresponding authorities conducting an investigation into alleged illegal acts that have caused serious damage or damage to the country by the former presidents of Mexico and, where appropriate, initiate a judicial proceeding guaranteeing due process?

The promotional posters for the consultation this Sunday, September 6 in Los Angeles, bring the images of the last former presidents of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, Felipe Calderón, Vicente Fox, Carlos Salinas and even Ernesto Zedillo.

The citizen consultation was proposed by the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in the face of pressure from Mexicans so that corruption and abuses committed during the administrations of the former presidents are not overlooked. However, the Mexican president has said that he is not in favor of revenge, and that he leaves the matter in the hands of the people for them to decide.

They are not aware

Fedra Sánchez, leader of the Guerrero House in California, said she was not aware of the consultation, but would love to participate. “I am in favor of their being prosecuted. I am not a Morenista, but I am López Obradorista. I love most of what President Andrés Manuel does, although I don’t always agree on everything ”.

José Ángel Barajas, leader of the Sinaloan Fraternity in California, said that the problems began for Mexico from former president Luis Echevarría, and from this six-year term those who followed him should be judged.

It’s time they unmask both corrupt presidentor. How good that Andrés Manuel became president. I don’t think it ended up with so much corruption. There still is, but not on the scale we saw before ”.

The deadline to collect signatures is September 15, and the goal is to get 1.8 million.
