Los Angeles Council cuts $ 150 million dollars to Police budget

The motion arose in the wake of protests against police brutality.

Los Angeles Police Budget Cut For the following fiscal year, it became reality on Wednesday after the city council voted 12 to 2 in favor of the proposal.

The idea gained steam several weeks ago amid the movement of protests against police brutality and racial injustice when Mayor Eric Garcetti supported a motion to cut the budget.

Saying cut approved Wednesday is $ 150 million from a previous budget of around $ 1.8 billion.

Los Angeles is one of the cities with the highest number of incidents of police brutality against minorities in the country, if not the city with the highest number of incidents.

Wednesday's vote will result in a decrease in Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers from 9,988 to 9,757 for the following summer, the lowest amount for 12 years.

The $ 150 million saved from full wages and especially from overtime pay will be used in services and programs to benefit communities of color. One of the specific objectives is job creation.

The budget cut comes a day after the Los Angeles Unified School District voted to cut its police budget by a third (about $ 25 million, according to the AP agency), after a movement of demonstrations that in the end he achieved his goal.

“I want to take this moment to recognize the organizers of Black Lives Matter L.A. and others for keeping our feet on fire and demanding more from our government, ”said Council Member Curren Price, in statements made on Tuesday.
