While waiting to be able to return to dark rooms, “drive-in” cinemas are popping up all over Miami and its surroundings. While some exhibitors are announcing a gradual reopening, such as AMC which hopes to attract its customers to a hundred theaters from Thursday, August 20 with seats sold at 15 cents, the selling price of its first tickets a hundred years ago in Missouri, others are betting on outdoor cinema. Here are some options for experimenting with this concept that emerged in the United States in the 1930s.

Among the latest, Carpool Cinema Wynwood offers to watch a movie under the stars while being comfortably seated in the back seat of his car. Open from Thursday to Sunday, this open-air cinema, nestled in the heart of the city’s street art district, allows you to discover or rediscover certain essential achievements of the seventh art such as “Back to the future 3”, “The Mummy” by Stephen Sommers, without forgetting “Karate Kid”, all without taking any risks. Count $ 45 per vehicle (six people maximum). 2418 N Miami Ave, Miami – Info and reservations here

The cult film “Grease” and the animated feature film “Shrek” are showing at the Drive In at the Fair organized from Friday August 21 to Sunday August 23 at 7pm by 3FEO, an event agency from Coral Gables. On the program: a giant screen and cars parked several meters from each other for a vintage-style outing adapted to the current situation. $ 11 dollars per person. 10901 SW 24th St, Miami – Info and reservations here

Until October, the car parks of 160 Walmart stores in the United States are transformed into a “drive-in” cinema, including that of the brand located on Flagler Street in Miami. In partnership with the film company Tribeca Enterprises, supported by Robert De Niro, the American retail chain offers in particular to enjoy a free screening of “The Incredible Story of Winter the Dolphin” with Morgan Freeman (Tuesday, August 25 at 7 : 30pm) or even “Selena”, a biographical film which tells the life of the eponymous singer of Mexican origin (Wednesday August 26 at 7:30 pm). 9191 W Flagler St – Info and reservation here

After hosting the Super Bowl, the final of the American football championship last February, the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens has turned into a drive-in cinema. The lawn of the Dolphins stadium can accommodate more than 200 vehicles for a screening under the stars, and a small open-air cinema has also been set up on the south side of the sports arena. From $ 12 per person. 347 Don Shula Dr, Miami Gardens – Info and reservations here

Fans of the seventh art can also be seduced by a floating cinema session. These unusual screenings, which will be held in Miami from Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 September, are offered by Australian company Beyond Cinema. Between 12 and 24 boats will accommodate up to eight people per boat for the duration of a projection on the water. The exact location, price and program have not yet been revealed by the organizers. The independent establishments Savor Cinema and Cinema Paradiso also offer a canvas from the seat of your vehicle. The two brands organize outdoor screenings in the parking lot of a Fort Lauderdale marina. Count $ 30 dollars per vehicle. 2150 SE 17th St, Fort Lauderdale – Info and reservations here. The two cinemas have also embarked on a virtual program. This does not replace a good armchair in one of their theaters, but it allows you to see or re-watch about fifty independent films while supporting them. Allow between $ 4 and $ 18 depending on the title chosen. Info here.

Finally, open for over fifty years, Fort Lauderdale’s Drive-In Swap Shop is one of the largest drive-in theaters in the United States. With 13 screens, its programming is current and the films are shown at the rate of one to two screenings per day. Spectators can also order drinks and popcorn. 3291 W Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale – Info and reservations here
