Photo enthusiasts are in a trance: one of the major institutions of contemporary photography arrives in New York. Fotografiska opens on Saturday December 14th at 281 Park Avenue South, at the corner of 22nd Street. The prestigious address houses one of the jewels of New York architecture, a listed five-story building in the Flemish Renaissance style, built in 1894. Long owned by religious organizations, the former Church Missions House turns into a multi-conceptual place where the power of image communication appears in all its forms, from film photography to multimedia documentary.

This new artistic meeting is the New York extension of the Fotografiska in Stockholm, designed in 2010 by the Swedish brothers Per and Jan Broman and which, in less than ten years, has become an essential reference in photography. Fotografiska, funded by private funds, is not a classical museum – its own collection is very small – or an institution like the International Center for Photography (ICP) in Manhattan. It is not an art gallery because no work presented is for sale. " More than a space where we show art, it is a place where we come to live an experience "Said German photographer Yoram Roth, chairman of the board of directors and responsible for the international development of the Fotografiska group.

Several rotating exhibitions, mounted directly with photographers, private collectors and museums, are presented at the same time between the second and fourth floors. The 1st floor is dedicated to the Verōnika restaurant, named after the patron saint of photographers and directed by the group of Stephen Starr, notably in charge of The Cuckoo, upland, Buddakan and Morimoto in New York and At the Old Woman in Paris. Events and discussions will occupy the fifth and last floor. " We come to Fotografiska not only for the photographs, but also to take the time to exchange and for a culinary experience, believes Yoram Roth. Many museums offer this but we have the most inclusive approach ”. Fotografiska will remain open late in the evening until 11 p.m. or even midnight from Thursday to Saturday.

The works of five confirmed artists, including four women, make the opening: the famous German fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth presents the sensual bodies of her superb models, a striking contrast to the stripped landscapes of Swedish environmentalist Helene Schmitz; the portraits inspired by the painter Gustav Klimt of the African-American multimedia artist Tawny Chatmon echo the cinematographic productions of the Israeli Adi Nes.

" Fotografiska is launched in partnership with TIME magazine, specifies the director of the exhibitions Amanda Hajjar, come from the Gagosian gallery. Anastasia Taylor-Lind’s incredible work on motherhood is on display. The Anglo-Swedish photojournalist has looked at the different types of childcare in the United States, nannies the day care" a theme that affects all New Yorkers ".

The inauguration was delayed by several months due to the major renovations of some 4,000 m2 of the historic building to accommodate 500,000 visitors per year, according to forecasts. After Stockholm, Tallinn in Estonia and New York, the group will continue its European development with a fourth Fotografiska, in London next year.
