Most counties in the state have extended confinement. Sometimes until the end of May … But at the same time, Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, has relaxed the rules. He therefore encouraged residents to ventilate and take advantage of the outdoor spaces. And it goes from golf to meditation, including picnics and contemplation of the sun.

Does that mean you can rush to the beaches? No ! Does that mean you can travel around the state? No more. Despite the flexibility, the watchwords remain the same: move as locally as possible (avoid traveling by car), move alone or in a small group, and always respect the safety distance of 6 feet.

In order to avoid any confusion following the governor's announcement, the precise list of activities now authorized was published on the official California crisis website. Here is the detail of what we can practice today:

  • Martial arts like Tai Chi or qi gong (solo)
  • Athleticism
  • Rowing (singles)
  • Badminton (singles)
  • Baseball / softball
  • BMX
  • Canoeing (singles)
  • Crab hunting
  • Running
  • Horse riding (solo)
  • Climbing
  • Exploring the rocks
  • Football (but not in groups)
  • Golf (solo and walking, because no golf carts)
  • Climbing in the trees
  • Solitary gardening
  • Jogging
  • Kiteboard and kitesurf
  • Washing his car
  • Meditation
  • Watching the sunrise / sunset
  • Photography
  • Picnics with family members only
  • The quad
  • Hiking (on trails that allow it from a distance)
  • Skateboarding (most skateparks reopen, but here too, groups are not allowed)
  • The release of his pet
  • Table tennis (singles)
  • The trampoline
  • The bicycle, the scooter or the roller
  • Volleyball (singles)
  • Yoga

So many activities useful for physical and mental well-being. But to take advantage of it, be careful to check in advance where you can go or not. The vast majority of state parks have closed to slow the spread of the virus, and while some are starting to reopen, it is on a case-by-case basis. Beaches remain closed, roads are cut and parking lots closed … For State Parks and their campsites, detailed information can be found here. To be completed with a tour of the county and city websites to avoid unpleasant surprises.

In Nevada

Steve Sisolak, the governor of Nevada extended the state’s confinement until May 15 with a new roadmap that is less restrictive for residents. Since Friday, May 1, the governor has authorized sporting activities hitherto prohibited. It is again possible to play golf, tennis or paddle “as long as it is done safely and in a way that prevents the spread of Covid-19”. For the moment, state parks (Valley of Fire for example) and campsites remain closed.
