The fire of Notre-Dame de Paris, April 15, moved the world. While security work on the building is under way, the Getty Center in Los Angeles wanted to put into perspective the uncertain destiny of this architectural and historical work in an exhibition: "An Enduring Icon", visible until Sunday. October 20th.

Echoing this drama, this exhibition explores the history of Notre-Dame de Paris through thirty-eight works: paintings, photographs, lithographs and books. A way of celebrating the central role of the cathedral in European worship and culture, from its construction in the Middle Ages to its restoration in the mid-1800s, including the novel by Victor Hugo The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Old images showing the stone gargoyles of the cathedral, like the photograph of Victor Hugo, also remind us that this monument was and remains an inspiration for many artists.
