Attend Labor Day Capitol Concert
Like every year, the National Symphony Orchestra is holding a free concert at the Capitol on West Lawn on Sunday, September 1st at 8pm. The symphony orchestra has been in existence since the 1930s and has taken up patriotic songs to celebrate the Labor day weekend. For the curious ones who wish to attend the rehearsals in open air at 3:30 pm, know that the doors open at 3pm. If the weather does not permit an outdoor concert, the show will take place at Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater. More information here.
Meet authors at the National Book Festival
On Saturday, August 31st, the Library of Congress National Book Festival opens between 8:30 am and 8pm at the Washington Convention Center (801 Mt. Vernon Place NW). The literary event is an opportunity to meet more than 140 authors, illustrators and poets, who come to present their books. The festival offers many topics of discussion around literature and activities are also offered to children. More information here.
See a baseball game
Sports fans can enjoy Labor Day to see a game from the Washington team, the Nationals. On Sunday, September 1, the team faces the Miami Marlins and Monday, September 2, the New York Mets. Fireworks are also planned on Friday to mark the beginning of the weekend. Count between 30 and 70 dollars for a ticket. More information here.
Have fun at Greenbelt Labor Day in Maryland
Since its inception in 1955, Greenbelt Labor Day Festival has become an institution. This festival in Greenbelt, Maryland, is completely free and takes place between Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 2nd at the Roosevelt Center. Rides, exhibitions, children's entertainment, food stands … Many activities take place all weekend, not to mention the traditional parade of Labor Day on Monday, September 2 between 10am and 12pm. The Maryland Renaissance Festival is held annually in Annapolis, Maryland (approximately 40 minutes from Washington).
