A Cal State Northridge University professor has created an interactive map to track the progress of the coronavirus in every Los Angeles county neighborhood, reports ABC 7.

Geography teacher Steven Graves said he hopes well help better understand how the virus is affecting people locally.

It has also created maps that track COVID-19 county by county nationwide, something that, according to him, gives context to the numbers.

The Los Angeles County map can be viewed here.

The map shows that there are cases throughout the county, from Santa Clarita to Carson and La Verne. Some of the areas with the highest concentrations, of course, are those with the highest population densities, such as communities from the west side to downtown Los Angeles.

A similar map of the United States is available here.

“There are some places in the United States that have much smaller numbers, but have much smaller populations. Therefore, their rate is double, triple or even 20 times higher than ours, "said Graves.

Graves said he created these maps because other maps he saw did not provide a sufficient level of detail. He recognized that much of the national data that is collected may be flawed at this early stage.

"We really don't know how good the data is that tracks those with the coronavirus," Graves said in a CSUN statement. “Everyone is doing the best they can. But once the speed at which people are evaluated improves, we will have a better idea of what is happening. ”

"Right now, our maps are creating a foundation on which we will eventually create a better picture of what is happening in the country, county by county."
