The recommendation to avoid the spread in the following weeks when an increase in cases is expected, is to stay at home

Los Angeles, Long Beach, Glendale, and Santa Clarita are among the cities with the most coronavirus cases in Los Angeles County, according to the numbers provided by the Department of Public Health of said county. The call of the health authorities to Angelenos is to reinforce preventive measures such as staying at home, since a rebound in cases is anticipated in the coming weeks.

As of noon on April 6, 6,363 confirmed cases were recorded and 147 people had died as a result of this pandemic.

The highest number of cases have been reported in the city of Los Angeles with 2,851; Long Beach, 230; Glendale, 142; and Santa Clarita, 106.

Ara Najarian, mayor of the city of Glendale, said that taking into account the number of inhabitants, there are other cities that have higher percentages than Glendale according to the number of inhabitants like Palos Verdes.

Palos Verdes has a population estimated at 42,364 inhabitants until 2017, according to the Census Bureau, and presents 25 cases. Glendale has just over 200,000 residents. Brentwood records 49 cases for a population of 62,000. In none of these cities, cases reach one for every 100 inhabitants.

"We are in the middle compared to other cities. And we do the best we can. Of course we are going to improve to reduce the spread, ”said Mayor Najarian.

About 40% of the population is of Armenian origin in Glendale, and almost 17% are Latino.

Najarian said a significant proportion are older adults; and he explained that perhaps because the Armenians are very familiar and like to be together, there is a slightly higher number of infections.

"Many of us don't feel too bad about not seeing our parents during quarantine. I haven't seen mine for a week and that is killing me ”he recognized.

And he considered that the high number of cases could probably be attributed to the city having three huge hospitals. Perhaps, he noted, the county in making its numbers does not discriminate between those who live in Glendale, and those who do not reside in this city, but who are tested for coronavirus in local hospitals and test positive.

Within the City of Los Angeles, the areas with the most cases are: Melrose with 147; Hollywood with 100: North Hollywood, 90; Sylmar is 70; and Silver Lake, 58. East Los Angeles records 51 cases.

“The highest proportion of deaths has occurred in people with serious health conditions; or that they are over 65 also with previous medical problems, "said Barbara Ferrer, director of public health for Los Angeles County.

Because a significant increase in cases is expected in the coming weeks, asked Angelenos not to leave their house, unless it is for urgent matters.

"When you go out, cover your mouth and nose with a cloth if you are going to walk around other people and keep a distance of six feet," recommended the expert.

However, he stressed that the best weapon against the coronavirus is to wash your hands frequently and stay home.

Of the 15 recent deaths that have occurred, eight had pre-existing conditions; and in twelve, people were over 65 years old. Only five of those over 65 years of age had no previous illness.

In the past 48 hours, 1,083 new cases were reported in Los Angeles County.

"Wearing a cloth mask to cover your face when you go out can help lower the transmission rate and reduce the burden on our hospitals in these critical weeks ahead," said Robert Garcia, mayor of Long Beach, a city that after Los Angeles has the highest number of cases.

Long Beach authorities advised people to comply with the order to stay home and only go out for essential activities such as buying food, receiving medical attention, exercising, walking the dog or caring for a loved one.
