Weather in SoCal: Wind, cold and snow that make it difficult to travel in the San Gabriel Mountains

A winter weather warning, which means extremely challenging travel conditions, including icy and snowy roads, is in force in the San Gabriel Mountains on Thursday due to a winter storm that has negligible impact at lower elevations.

The possibility of snow, combined with gusts of wind from 30 to 40 mph, lled the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a winter weather advisory for the mountainous areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties that is in effect until 11 p.m.

The notice went into effect at 6 p.m. Wednesday and is set to expire at 11 p.m. from Thursday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said that up to 4 inches of snow would accumulate above 5,500 feet and up to 2 inches through the Interstate 5 corridor as northwest winds blow 30 to 40 miles per hour.

He also warned that hail or ice pellet rains are a possibility in the mountains, but at sea level, there is only a 20% chance of precipitation.

Scattered showers will continue through Thursday night with a slight chance of thunderstorms.

The US Weather Service reported hailstorms in Ojai:

Brief torrential rains and small granules of hail / ice will be possible. Snow levels will be around 3,500 feet.

Sunny skies were forecast Thursday in Orange County, except for Mission Viejo and locations in the Santa Ana Mountains, where partially cloudy conditions will prevail.
