Three patients at Children's Hospital have been diagnosed with a rare condition that affects some children who have had COVID-19

Three children admitted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles have been diagnosed with a rare condition believed to be related to COVID-19, prompting an effort by county health officials to identify similar cases in pediatric care units in Los Angeles.

Similar cases were first identified in New York, which is the state most affected by the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

In the days and weeks after the coronavirus outbreak slowed, several children were hospitalized with a rare inflammatory condition affecting their organs. New York reported its first pediatric death on Friday, according to the New York Times. The only other known death associated with the syndrome was a 14-year-old boy in England, The Times reported.

Initially it was believed that children had Kawasaki disease, a rare disease characterized by inflammation of the blood vessels and unusual dilation of the arteries that carry blood to the heart.

But as doctors in Europe and New York began to identify cases as a rare COVID-19-related complication in children, Doctors in Los Angeles responded to the increase in diagnoses of Kawasaki disease by testing patients with antibodies against the coronavirus.
