A confrontation inside a Ralphs grocery store in the Mid-Wilshire section of Los Angeles turned hostile after a man refused to cover his face, reports CBS Los Angeles.

The witnesses said that a store employee told the man he had to cover his face or leave the store, as required by Los Angeles county as part of efforts to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

It was then that the man allegedly started ramming a woman with a shopping cart. A worker then used pepper spray to incapacitate the man and called the police.

“I was reaching the end of a hallway and suddenly I heard some commotion and people were entering the hallway,” said one witness. “I looked and there was a guy yelling at someone, and suddenly you see him, you know, take his car and try to ram this woman.”

The witness said that the man continued to yell at the woman as he pushed his cart over her. He also said that he saw another woman try to push the man out of the way.

“I think I was just screaming about the mask,” he said. “I didn’t want to wear a mask.”

Video from a cell phone taken moments after the incident shows the man sitting on the floor, surrounded by milk that was presumably used to stop him from itching his eyes from pepper spray.

Paramedics took him to a hospital as a precaution. It is not known whether the assailant will face charges.
