For this second episode of season 3 of The Thing About France, Liesl Schillinger receives Thomas Chatterton Williams.

The writer, recently author of Self-Portrait in Black and White: Unlearning Race, has lived in France for ten years where he writes for the New York Times, Harpers and The Guardian. In recent weeks, he has provoked controversy in the United States by being at the origin of a forum signed by some 150 American intellectuals and artists, denouncing the “cancel culture” and what he considers to be the excesses of the left American anti-racist. The interview was recorded before this controversy, but Thomas Chatterton Williams developed there at length his thoughts on the subject, but also his love for France or his passion for James Baldwin.
