Often misrepresented as one of the fathers of Impressionism, Edouard Manet (1832-1883) was more of a forerunner of modern painting. The Getty Center in Los Angeles has decided to highlight lesser-known works by the painter during the last years of his life. Co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago, the exhibition "Manet and Modern Beauty" will be proposed from October 8, 2019 to January 12, 2020.

Portraits of Parisiennes, still lifes, pastels, café scenes: the exhibited works reveal the French artist's fascination with fashion, flowers and femininity. Through the ninety paintings, the Getty presents the painter's impassive and objective interpretation of the society in which he lives.

Events such as guided tours, discussions and a costume workshop with historian Maxwell Barr will punctuate the exhibition.
