“70 YEARS OF CORRESPONDENCES: MAGNUM PHOTOS AND PICTO 1950-2020”

Location : Richard Taittinger Gallery

Address : 154 Ludlow St

The Picto laboratory and the Richard Taittinger Gallery located on the Lower East Side are proud to announce the exhibition “70 YEARS OF CORRESPONDENCES: MAGNUM PHOTOS AND PICTO 1950-2020”, curated by the historian of photography Carole Naggar. This collaboration which runs until December 20 between Magnum photos and Picto is a celebration of the 70 years of partnership between these two institutions in the world of photography. Conceived in three parts: YESTERDAY, TODAY and TOMORROW – this exhibition highlights a continuous cooperation since 1950 and presents the work of 21 photographers and more than 120 prints (vintage and modern).

YESTERDAY

Werner Bischof, René Burri, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Ernst Haas, George Rodger and David “Chim” Seymour will be part of this section with subjects ranging from sensitive photographs of Jean Marquis in Liverpool and Budapest.

TODAY

This section will be devoted to contemporary photographers collaborating with Picto, with particular emphasis on two French photographers belonging to distinct generations and practicing very different styles: Raymond Depardon, who presents prints from his series Correspondance new-yorkaise (1981) and his contemporary images of New York in color; and Antoine d’Agata, with, on a large installation, striking nudes and portraits from several series.

TOMORROW

The last section presents the work of three young female photographers, Carolyn Drake, Alessandra Sanguinetti and Sim Chi Yin who work in color and experiment for the first time with Picto laboratories. Sanguinetti’s series On the Sixth Day describes the life and death of animals in Argentina; Drake’s California on fire series deals with recent Californian disasters and depicts the landscapes a few weeks after the fires; Sim Chi Yin’s Most People Were Silent documents nuclear sites in North Korea and the United States.

The exhibition is free, reservations here. Sanitary measures on site and social distancing rules.
