The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second-largest in the United States, announced on Friday that all of its schools will close their doors starting Monday after an internal vote.

The decision taken tries to prevent further spread of COVID-19. LAUSD has nearly 670,000 students enrolled.

As of Thursday night, 198 cases of the new coronavirus had been reported in Los Angeles County.

The San Diego Unified School District, the second largest in the state, will also close its schools on Monday.

Superintendents Austin Beutner of Los Angeles and Cindy Marten of San Diego spoke on the phone early Friday and then released the statement with the news.

"California has entered a critical new phase in the fight to stop the further spread of the Covid-19 pandemic," the statement said. "There is evidence that the virus is already present in the communities we serve, and our efforts should be directed at preventing its spread."

Although calls to close schools were adding up, there were also voices of concern about the impact that a decision like the one made would have on thousands upon thousands of students who depend on schools for food every day.
