The mayor of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti announced Tuesday night that he dictated an order requiring all residents to cover their faces when visiting most essential businesses, in the hope that it will protect workers and decrease the spread of the coronavirus.

Starting on Friday, residents must wear a mask, bandana, or other covering over the nose and mouth When they are in supermarkets, pharmacies, hardware stores, coin-operated laundry services, restaurants, hotels, taxis, transportation vehicles, and many other essential services.

"These companies we are targeting … must also ensure that their employees have access to a clean bathroom with appropriate cleaning products such as soap and disinfectant and allow their employees to wash their hands every 30 minutes," said Garcetti.

Companies will also be required to guarantee social distancing between customers and employees.

Companies will be allowed to deny entry to customers who are not covered, Garcetti said.

"Cover up, save a life, it's that simple," said the Los Angeles mayor.

Also, as of Friday, workers in most essential companies must wear face covers, that business owners must provide or reimburse workers for the purchase.

If a company refuses to provide facial coverage for its workers, it could be fined, but the hope is that companies and customers will follow the order smoothly, Garcetti said.
