Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors expanded Tuesday a moratorium on evictions until June 30 and voted to consider also a wide variety of protections for tenants and landlords in reaction to the coronavirus crisis.

Extending the county-wide moratorium on commercial and residential tenant evictions will protect tenants and homeowners who are unable to pay mortgages and rents due to job losses from the coronavirus pandemic.

Without such a ban, "those who can be evicted will be on the street," Supervisor Kuehl warned when she filed the motion.

Property owners argued against the extension of the eviction ban.

A representative from the Greater Los Angeles Association of Building Owners and Administrators said he spoke on behalf of the owners and managers of 135 million square feet of properties that contribute $ 3.5 billion to the California economy, who said that want to be part of the solution and are committed to working with tenants

"We appreciate the intent" of the motion, BOMA / GLA's Aaron Taxy told the board. However, solutions "should not come disproportionately to paralyze our own business."

Taxy said some members had lost 70% or more of their rental income.

The eviction ban will be implemented through an executive order from the county government, which is leading the emergency response to the coronavirus crisis. In addition to unincorporated areas of the county, it will also apply to county cities that do not have eviction moratoriums of their own.
