Los Angeles City Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Monday a six-month moratorium on tenants of subsidized housing unable to pay their rent due to the economic ravages of the coronavirus.

"If you cannot pay the rent as a direct result of this emergency, you cannot be evicted (…). This does not mean that it is already solved, but that you will have to pay it in six monthsGarcetti said at a press conference broadcast online to avoid contact with journalists.

To do this, Garcetti prohibited the Ellis state law, which allows landlords to have the right to evict tenants to "close the deal."

The Los Angeles Council will debate Tuesday a law that would extend the moratorium to all rentals in the city, a request from various organizations, according to local media.

At the conference, Garcetti also ordered that bars and restaurants in the city can deliver alcoholic beverages your clients starting tomorrow.

Los Angeles County authorities confirmed 128 new cases and two more deaths this Monday, raising the total number of deceased to seven and that of cases to 536.

Of the two new deaths, one was a 60-year-old man from Glendale, a Los Angeles suburb, who had underlying health problems; and the other was between 30 and 50 years old, although no further details have been revealed so far.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the COVID-19 pandemic has already caused 332,935 infections and 14,510 deaths in 190 countries, of which 33,404 infected and 400 deaths are located in the United States, although local media suggest that the number already reaches 500 fatalities.
