Officials inaugurate a transition house for 100 women and men who have lived on the streets or without a conventional home.

Councilor Curren Price, Mayor Eric Garcetti and supervisor Hilda Solis yesterday celebrated the inauguration of the first homeless shelter in District 9, which they have called "Bringing Hope to Hope Street."

As part of the program, a “bridge home”, promoted in 2018 by the mayor, enabled the hostel located south of Hope Street at number 2817, which will receive 100 homeless women and men in the area.

"It's a monumental day because we're bringing hope to Esperanza Street, it's a reminder that we should never lose hope," said Councilman Price at the opening of the ceremony. “This morning we celebrate the culmination of this refuge in the 9th district, where 100 people, of the most vulnerable in our community living on the streets, will be helped in the transition to have permanent housing”

This refuge is number 12 established under this initiative and, like the other 11, will offer medical services, support for people to find a fixed home, work and have a successful reintegration into society.

“Here, our homeless neighbors will find refuge, comfort and healing. The most important thing is that they will be on the road to stability, independence and a new life. We know that this is just a chapter in their lives, this is not the end of their story, ”added the councilman.

Price also took the opportunity to thank the work of the mayor and the supervisor to face the housing crisis that is going through the city.

"We would not have accomplished this without the support of the city and the county, we have worked together with the mayor and the supervisor."

The Hope Street shelter has a designated area for homeless people to bring their pets, has an outside dining area, storage space, laundry and security 24 hours a day, in addition to basic services .

“We want people to leave here as soon as possible to permanent housing, this is not their final home, this is a place to settle down, to feel like a human being again, a place to clean your body, your clothes, their mind and to see where they are going, ”Garcetti explained.

The mayor said excitedly that the shelters are being built by leaps and bounds and soon more people will be able to access temporary housing while they wait for a permanent one.

"With the opening of this space we have 800 more beds for homeless people that we didn't have 18 months ago and 12 shelters, but by July 1 they will be 26, more than double what we have today, with more than 2,000 beds available," he said. Mayor.

“With these shelters we have the opportunity not only to change the lives of our brothers and sisters in the streets of Los Angeles, we also have the opportunity to change our lives and that of all people in Los Angeles, with dignity, health and permanent housing and I hope we can fight for more of these (shelters), ”the official added.

Each shelter will be available for three years, but as people move into fixed homes, other homeless people will be taken to these transitory spaces, that is, the beds can be reassigned up to four times a year.

“I will continue to work with our partners, including the city of Los Angeles, Volunteers of America, St. John’s Well Child and Family Center and other service providers as we face our growing homeless crisis. We will not rest until every county resident has a safe and warm place to sleep at night, ”said Solis.

The county supervisor raised her voice and sent a clear message to the governor of California, Gavin Newsom.

“Every city should have a shelter like this to start and help the transition of these people to permanent housing. We need everyone to achieve it, and yes, we need money from Sacramento, 2 billion dollars, Governor Gavin Newson please listen to us, we need your help now, Governor Newson we need your help now, we need it now not yesterday, ”said Solis.

In district nine there are two more projects underway, both on Figueroa Street, which will be inaugurated in the coming months.
