After California and New York, Florida declares a state of emergency in an attempt to stem the progression of COVID-19. The decision, made on Monday March 9 by Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida, is expected to allow the state to receive $ 27 million from the federal government to effectively fight coronavirus.

Currently, according to figures from the Florida Department of Health, two deaths have been reported in the Sunshine State, 21 people are infected with the virus and more than 300 have been placed under surveillance.

Ron Desantis, who reminded that the situation must be taken seriously without giving in to panic, urges older Florida residents as well as those with a medical history to follow the prevention recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention especially by avoiding crowded places and by regularly washing your hands.

For its part, the Florida Department of Health asks all those who have gone to high-risk countries such as China, South Korea, Italy or even Iran, to remain in solitary confinement for 14 days after their return in the hope of reducing the spread of COVID-19.

Several measures are also taken by various state institutions, including school districts which encourage families to postpone their trips originally planned during the Spring Break period.

For now, even if the Florida public schools remain open, the Miami-Dade school district is preparing for a possible closure of its 400 schools: a questionnaire aimed at families has been put in place to find out their needs in IT equipment so that the 350,000 pupils concerned can continue their studies online.
