They demand that they are in charge of cleaning everything so that no one gets infected, while they expose themselves without any benefit in return

Cleaning workers rallied Thursday in Los Angeles’s upscale Beverly Hills sector to raise awareness among employers and legislators about how the pandemic is devastating the economy and the health of these employees essential, vital to control the contagion.

We have been at the forefront in this entire pandemic, cleaning to prevent others from getting infected, but at the same time we have exposed ourselves to the disease and we have exposed our families in exchange for nothing“VerĂ³nica Lagunas, a cleaning worker, told Efe.

The call was made in a caravan that gathered dozens of cars that went through buildings in the exclusive sector of Beverly Hills and Century City, which are home to important companies and even the offices of senators and legislators.

David Huerta, president of the SEIU-USWW union, explained to Efe that the action was made to give a voice to the nearly 20,000 employees who work in this sector in California.

In addition to fighting COVID-19, janitors are facing cutbacks and in some cases even layoffs. The union leader warns that at least 12 of the affiliates have died after contracting the virus.

The undocumented workers in this industry and those benefited with TPS, a benefit that is about to end in January 2021, are one of the groups that most concern the union.

Another group of janitors protested at MacArthur Park to ask California Governor Gavin Newsom to sign SB 1257, which seeks expand protections for this group of essential workers.
