The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced this week that it needs to hire nearly 1,800 full-time and temporary workers across California to bolster the delivery of critical services, such as Unemployment Insurance (UI), to workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hired will receive training to operate call centers, process unemployment claims, and analyze applicant and employer documents to make salary determinations about benefits.

"This urgent hiring effort will enhance the Department's ability to process an unprecedented increase in benefit claims, while offering Californians an employment opportunity during this difficult time," said Sharon Hilliard, director of the EDD.

The new hires will join nearly 1,200 trained EDD employees involved in the processing of unemployment claims; as well as more than 1,300 redirected employees from across the EDD and state government and nearly 500 temporary provider employees.

In addition, some providers are helping EDD streamline call center operations to better serve customers.
