He Los Angeles Unified School District has not yet decided whether its students will physically return to classrooms on the first day of work for the upcoming academic year., which will start next August 12. What Superintendent Austin Beutner does advance is that he probably classroom and online training will be combined.

“As we look to the start of a new school year, the challenge is to build on the foundation that has been established in recent months and apply the learnings to provide the best possible education for studentsYes, ”Beutner said in his weekly statement on the coronavirus.

At the start of the pandemic in the United States, 75,000 unified district employees and almost 700,000 students had to adapt to remote training, which posed great challenges and exacerbated socioeconomic disparities among students. Latino minors have been more affected by this method of learning.

One of the biggest problems of this last academic stage has been the lack of adequate equipment, reliable internet access and constant help at home, which caused many virtual dropouts.

"We knew we were going into unknown territory," Beutner himself acknowledged on Monday. "It was needed training for students and their families on how to use these tools, as well as the different communication and education technologies that are part of an online education ”, he explained. In addition, teachers had to adapt to online training plans, "practically overnight."

To improve tools and give students a proper education, the new school year must include a regular class schedule, take attendance and give daily live directions. The superintendent assured that his school district will also update weekly on his reopening plans and will meet regularly with the community to discuss issues related to the school year.
